Chapter 20

Conrad

Dozens of troops in black flooded in behind the war machine. They wore tactical armor and full-faced helmets equipped with breathing apparatus and tinted visors. The butts of silver rifles pressed against their shoulders, the muzzles pointing at the defenders.

A massive barrel slowly extended from the tank turret. Arcanes dove behind barriers and a multi-colored array of spells flashed through the air. The Razor troops responded with their rifles. Black electro bullets filled the air.

Despite the onslaught of magic, the enemy barely faltered. Their uniforms absorbed the brunt of the magical attacks. They were slowed, but not stopped.

"They're wearing different uniforms than the people up top," Ambria said. "They must be reinforced against magic."

"But how?" Conrad ducked behind a barrier with the others. "How would noms know how to block magic?"

"Does it really matter right now?" Ambria gripped her wand tight. "We can't fight them."

Howls and war cries rose above the bedlam. Lycans shifted to wolf form and vampires blurred forward. The enemy front line faltered beneath the physical onslaught. The tank turned its barrel toward the front row of Arcanes and fired. A great boom thundered through the cavern. A huge black sphere flew overhead and exploded, unleashing a wave of electrical impulses. Convulsions seized swaths of Arcanes and drove them to the floor.

More troops emerged, these in metallic exoskeletons. They grappled with the vampires and werewolves, machines matching supernatural strength. What had been a triumphant blitz turned into a full-on retreat.

A squad of enemies broke through the first barrier. Conrad summoned the first power and leapt to his feet. Azure power arced from his hands and lanced into the first two soldiers. Magic-resistant armor smoke and burned. They cried out and ran into each other in their haste to escape. Ivy channeled Murk into a giant sledgehammer and batted three soldiers like cricket balls. They flew back into their comrades, bowling them over and foiling the blitz.

The tank turret rotated their way. In a moment, the entire area would be blanketed with electricity. Conrad speared more soldiers with the first power, but there were too many for him to stop them all.

The tank fired. Ivy wove a sphere of Murk and intercepted the electro shell. It exploded inside, disintegrating the shield, but not before all its energy dissipated into the air. "I can do this all day!" Ivy shouted.

"I have an idea." Conrad spun a rotating shield to deflect electro bullets. "Ivy can you plug the barrel?"

Her eyes lit. "Oh, that would be neat!"

"Can you do it from this distance?" The tank was fifty yards from their position.

Ivy frowned. "I need to be a little closer."

"Then let's do it." Conrad pushed his hands forward and the shield flew back at the soldiers, bulldozing them out of the way. Lycans and vampires surged from the enemy's right flank, forcing the mechanized units to engage. The backline Arcanes moved forward while healers dragged the unconscious out of the fight.

"Surrender!" A voice boomed from a loudspeaker on the tank. "This waystation is hereby placed under the authority of Razor Echelon.
